Recovery Coaches provide strengths-based, solutions-focused support for people who have experienced problems due to substance use or addiction and for people who have been affected by others' addiction. Recovery Coaches are often but not always experts by experience who have received specialized Recovery Coach training to perform specific roles.
They are connectors, forming empathic relationships with potential clients, and instilling hope as they use affirmative inquiry and motivational interviewing to encourage them to assertively link with available addiction and recovery services. These services include harm reduction, assessment, stabilization, medical treatments, mental health professionals, various modalities of addiction treatment and the community of recovery.
Recovery coaches help clients overcome barriers, fill gaps in the system of care, encourage client autonomy, and serve as community connectors through relationships with people from resources that support well-being.
Recovery coaches do not diagnose, counsel, treat or sponsor their clients. They are not associated with any particular modality of treatment or type of recovery. Like other forms of coaching, Recovery Coaching involves creating and holding a secure space where the client may evaluate assets and strengths, envision solutions and co-create realistic and attainable goals.
